180 Statement

May 8, 2009

In 1994, Congress passed a bill called, The Safe and Drug-Free School Act conducting a process that if a student was found with drugs of any type or a weapon of any kind had to be expelled. Even though results show a decrease in criminal activity within the city’s schools the numbers of expulsions, suspensions and detentions continued to increase over the past three years. There should be punishment but each act should be looked upon as a single entity. A simple gift of wine to a favorite teacher should not be looked at as equal to that of a brawl with an enemy or even a shooting. There should be rules and punishments but the “Zero Tolerance” policy is not the answer. One statement made was that every weapon was a weapon and every drug was a drug no matter what kind they were, they were all seen as equal. If that’s the case then we might as well take eating and writing utensils out of the hands of the children because those could cause just as much damage.
